Crayfish of Wisconsin

Between 2004 and 2007 citizens assisted with collection of crayfish for a research study about the effects of the invasive rusty crayfish on native crayfish in water bodies across Wisconsin. Citizens collected crayfish, then preserved them and delivered them to a local drop off site.  At their chosen field locations, citizens also collected a variety of water quality parameters (such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity).

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison collected the crayfish from the drop off locations and identified them. Citizens were provided results of the type of crayfish found at their monitoring sites and the data were compiled in maps and scientific papers as part of a project about Aquatic Invasive Species by Dr. Jake VanderZanden and researcher Jeff Maxted.

Results of crayfish collections are available for 2004, 2005, and 2006. A report showing types of crayfish present in various water bodies of the state up to prior to the start of the project and up until 2004 is also available.

Researcher Jeff Maxted developed a presentation: Rusty Crayfish WI Invader about the research being conducted on crayfish and implications of the invasive rusty crayfish.  This presentation is posted in pdf format for your information.
